The natural reaction or response to reverence is obedience; we will always obey who or what we revered. To know who or what we worship therefore, we need to answer the question of who or what we are obeying. Whose instructions can we not but carry out? What is that thing that normally influences our actions?

When we are able to sincerely answer these questions, our object of worship will be plainly revealed to us. Jesus said the following while shedding the light on the things that people really feared: “These people honour Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine the precepts of men.”
